![]() ![]() I do not advise trying to build a SQ oriented sub unless you are dedicated to learning the intricacies and plan on spending a lot of money and time fine tuning your skills with a lot of failed projects. I started building subs in 2011 and it took me a very long time to get familiar with how all the parts work together. If you want to build SQ oriented subwoofers, you will need to learn the effect each different part of the sub has. Be wary of sub builders who boast about their recones being substantially better than what came from the factory because there is always going to be a compromise. There are lots of guys on forums whose depth of knowledge on how subwoofers work isn't very deep, but they manage to piece together a lot of big stuff that looks cool yet is good for SPL only. It's nothing more than getting a huge motor, a huge coil, and tossing it together with 3 or 4 stiff spiders and a cone with a giant surround. It's ridiculously easy to build a SPL sub. That is about the last decision i need to make is replacement speakers.It's not as hard as people are making it out to be and you don't have to be a genius but you do have to set a goal for the subwoofer, and build it with the parts appropriate for those goals. Then I had a friend make me a cargo cover for the back. I put a writeup in the electronics section. Now I can hear and feel the bass with the top off. I test fitted a Sundown SD-2 10" and it fit perfectly (I was using a friends Jeep - I paid him back by giving him a box). I ended up using the under-seat locations for both front seats. While I was planning and driving around with the top off my Jeep, I realized I had three goals: 1) I needed a way to secure and lock the back cargo area of the Jeep because I never leave the soft top on, 2) Because the back would be sealed up, I couldn't put the sub in the back, 3) The install had to be 100% stealth.If there is nothing to steal, why break in? I planned to put in TWO 10" subs, one on each side just like you did, but I thought I'd have the same problem. My second attempt was going to be exactly like you did. Problem is once the hard top was put away, so was the bass. The results were great.as long as the hard top was on. Basically I sliced the front on the factory enclosure, added an MDF ring and glassed up the box. My first attempt was rebuilding the factory sub box to accommodate a 10" shallow mount. I experimented with some different subs in different locations.
